Outriders by People Can Fly launched on April 1, 2021. It is a third-person shooter/role play game which can be played on most platforms. My initial experience with the game was in the demo mode, which was well worth it as it helped get a handle on the game play and controls. I play on PC so getting things mapped is the first challenge of any new PC game as each mapping is usually different from the other, even when games are made by the same group.
The first class I tried was the Technomancer, which I have to say I wasn’t really thrilled with and only progressed this class to about level 5 at present. I didn’t find that there were many helpful skills, but again this was the first one that I tried and was still learning the game play.
The second is the Pyromancer. This is much more my style of play. High damage, distance play. It could be that I just got the hang of the way the game runs and plays, but it could also be that this class is much more my style as I do enjoy sitting back and shooting stuff. The pyro gives you some protection when things get too close.
Trickster is the third class that I have tried and again, not quite my type of play. However, it does have lots of interesting and fun mechanics. For those that like to play rogue style characters this one is going to be up your ally. It was fun for the few levels I have played so far, and I might go back to it, but it doesn’t match my style of shooting much so may not.
The last one is the Devastator. This is a tankish play style and in this type of game outside of my current comfort zone. I likely won’t be playing this one, but do know that some people really like it as it is highly close range and you lead the charge.
Leveling is pretty quick, especially following the story. HOWEVER, it is highly recommended that you stay in World Tier 1 if you are running solo. Things get hard the higher your World Tier, found this out the hard way.
So far the story is unique and fun. The play is strong and challenging. The quests are interesting and help to advance the story and many are re-playable. Loot so far has been decent and shows progression, though there is a lot of junk before you get the good stuff. The junk can be broken down for currency and other parts that are needed for other things that I haven’t explored yet.
From a casual gamer this one does hit the mark for a quick release without requiring much input. It’s not mindless, but meets the needs for those of us who aren’t always able to play.
The scaling works well to help get your friends up in levels too, which is exceptionally important when you go to play with others. While there are problems still, so far I feel this has been a refreshing change in this type of game play.
