The school year started much as we expected. Bath children were ready and excited to go back to school to see their friends and meet their new teachers.
We were about worried about the youngest as we didn’t want to see him continue with the challenges he faced in grade 3. The frequent calm down trips to the office and disconnection from learning.
With the oldest child we were only worried about how to get him to all of the activities he was planning to participate in this year. There was also the possibility of him being involved with girls in a dating way.
While there were challenges for the youngest it was different and more in regards to learning expectations then fully behavioral. For the oldest between Cory and myself getting him to Cross Country, Volleyball, Badminton, Track & Field and his frequent early morning Gym workouts we managed.
They both learned and grew throughout the year. The oldest growing physically by about six inches. They made a few new friends. Learned more about how they want to be seen as young people, and overall impressed us with how they were in school.
The youngest did get caught up in a few problematic situations, one involving betting with money at school, which is against the rules, and led to a larger problem being uncovered related to kids selling things to each other. Again, something not allowed, in the way they were going about it anyway.
Closer to the end of the year we found out that the youngest had been bullied for much of the school year by a student who had already been involved with bullying others in previous years. The youngest child handled it well by disengaging from the other child, but we found out thatt it had escalated to the point that the children’s late father was being brought up in a mean way.
Bullying is never acceptable, but bringing up something that you know is traumatic nuser acceptable and just outright mean. That this was a continued occurrence that we did not find out about until the last few weeks of school was unacceptable, which prompted a meeting with school administration to ensure a plan was in place to handle any ffor then issues likethis with our youngest.
We have a good administrative team who recognized that they should have informed me earlier so I could help the youngest understand what was happening and provide fools to help him handle the situation. It should not have taken a grade 8 student and teacher from another school to witness the incident for action to have taken place.
While this is an incident that happened with our child I also started to hear about things chappening with others and brought this forward. We have a good school but are still seeing the Challenges and delany in social behavior from those that had learning disrupted.
Overall, I think the kids had a great year. The oldest has taken to hurdles and really enjoyed the other sports that he participated in. He found his outlet for stress management in fitness and managed to continue to do very well academically. He was actively involved in making his school a better place.
The youngest proved that he can be an academic achiever with a little encouragement and focus. His goal was to get as many 4’s on his report card as he could and he was successful in obtaining quite a few.
A great start to summer for both boys.
